Checklist for your new radiology practice renovation

19 Jul 2017 7:26 AM - Radiology

Renovating your radiology practice will help your business grow with more patient facilities, better employee workflows and up-to-date branding. But to achieve a strong return on investment, it requires careful planning.

Follow our seven-step checklist to ensure the renovation of your radiology practice gets the best results:

Step 1: Identify return on investment

Before you do anything else, understand exactly what you want to achieve from the renovation and how this will help you to achieve your business goals over the next five to 10 years.

A renovation comes with a significant investment, so it’s important to know that this investment will return benefits across your business. You don’t want to have to renovate your practice every two years, so consider the growth rate you’re aiming for over the next decade and what facilities you’ll need in place to achieve this.

Step 2: Solve existing problems

If the current interior layout is causing problems, you may want to address these first. For example, widening hallways may solve any staff or patient workflow issues, and building in extra storage in exam and treatment rooms will play a role in improving productivity and decreasing appointment times.

The last thing you want to do is replicate existing problems on a larger scale with a poorly planned renovation. Unless you address these problems head-on, a renovation won’t magically solve them on its own.

Step 3: Put a design in place

When designing a renovation, it’s vital to put your patients’ and employees’ needs first. That means ensuring your examination rooms are patient-friendly, and your staff have all the necessary tools and equipment well organised and close to hand.

You’ll also need to ensure that you comply with a range of best practice measures. For example, does your building have sufficient power supply to run your sophisticated equipment, now and in the future? Is any reinforcement required to support heavy equipment loads? Are your doors and hallways wide enough to accommodate the delivery and installation of new equipment? Do you have appropriate street access in place for equipment installation and maintenance crews?

Use our template to set out your wish list vs must haves to ensure all the necessities have been accounted for before you turn your attention to the finer details.

Step 4: Define your scope of works

With a clear renovation design in place, you’ll need to define a scope of works. Go through your list of must-haves and determine any associated factors such as additional power capacity for radiology equipment, or any structural reinforcement required.

Now it’s time to set a budget. You can either do this based on the finances you have available, or contact contractors for detailed quotes to give you a clear ballpark for your project.

Step 5: Finance your project

With a budget in place, you can begin to examine your financing options. If you don’t have the available cash to finance the renovation yourself, you might consider bringing in some partners, or contacting a specialised healthcare finance company.

Step 6: Compare quotes

Choose at least three contractors to quote on your project to give you a strong basis for comparison. Look for contractors with specialised experience in radiology practice renovations, and submit the same scope of works to all contractors to ensure you’re assessing them on a level playing field.

Step 7: Select a contractor
